DJ Francisco Guerra

.
San Francisco, New York City, Madrid, Barcelona, Orlando, New England...

That's just the beginning of this wonderful journey.

My journey began when I saw the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. As a child I was completely overcome by the concept of the Sun blasting from the sky and singing to me. This Earth shattering notion has stayed with me and it has put its imprint on me at the age of four.

Interestingly, it wasn't until recently that I reconnected with and understood the phenomenon of sound blasting from the sky - pleasantly - allowing colors and lights to sing back to me on a dance floor. I've always communicated with people in the past about how I can recognize colors through key signatures and they always came back with "have another pill, sweetie". But I never had to alter my mind to enjoy the sights of sound. As I connect more with my synesthesia, music, podcasting, and remixing music become pure art and pleasure.

My musical performance journey began at the age of 12 when I taught myself to read music and play piano. I was admitted into the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. I went through intensive ear training, advanced musical theory, and performed in state-wide jazz competitions in a small and large jazz ensemble. Even though I've always been a fan of the club scene I really only started taking music mixing/blending seriously in December 2006. I bought my first Denon CDJs, a Pioneer mixer, and got myself a job as a bar DJ once a month in Portland, Oregon. 6 months later I was DJing the largest dancefloor in Maine at the annual Southern Maine Pride Pier Dance. Soon after in June 2007 I started my website and to this day have received over 100,000 hits and up to 40,000 podcast downloads through various channels.

Music is viral. I'm in it for the journey. I would love the opportunity to take you with me.

fellowsr71: HOORAY! You got the BIGGEST Piece of Pie! http://myspace.com/rofo71
That means they liked you most! Save a bite for me! I love pie.
Always the social butterfly is Mister Guerra. We've been to three different countries together, one I got arrested in (sort of), but he knows somebody everywhere but border patrol. In Amsterdam it's "hey Paco!," in London "it's Sir DJ Francisco, does the Queen know?" Oh, the Queen knows!
So now I can't even go on the internet or to a pool for that matter without somebody knowing Paco. I'm not complaining, mind you. It's never been a boring ride and I know I'll know you forever. We've shared a lot of music together, squealed posed to Duran Duran while driving, entertained "the masses" at Bear Weekend in Guerneville with the B-52's and Deee-Lite. I know that music is your passion and in your heart because we've shared that, and now you're sharing it with the world. You're truly a dynamic personality and a great and generous friend.
Seems everybody else sees it too! We the listeners and voters have witnessed the beginning, we're gonna see your names in parenthesis (DJ Andy Ajar's "Don't Refill Paula's Prescription" Mix) and (Paco's "Britney Needs More Fanta" Mix) on the backs of CD cases (what are those?) in no time.
I can't wait to see you lucky stars shine! You are America's Next Top Model(s) Spinners!
Congratulations to you both,
See you in Orlando! smilies/grin.gif smilies/cool.gif smilies/tongue.gif

I just wanted to let you know that it has been such an honor being in this contest with you. You and Andy have so many years of experience and deserve to win this thing. This was my first time EVER putting myself out there. I have learned so much from you all. I never imagined that I would make it this far along with you guys. Thank you so much for sharing this experience with me. I have already won in so many more ways than just this contest. I do hope that you or Andy make it to the top two. If I don't make it this year. I will be ready to win this thing next year. Good Luck!! DJ Figious

Way to go on your set this week. I am already picking out my bathing suit to go see you and Dj Andy Ajar spinning @ the pool. Hands down you two are the biggest talents on here and true "dj's" in every aspect. Hopefully the other listeners can tell the difference between true djs and computer made sets. See you in Orlando.

After throwing down The Set Of The Weekend at B(e)arcelona last weekend, it's no surprise to see you in the Top 4. Energetic, kinetic, rhythmic, loaded with familiar songs nestled in with songs that haven't become better known yet (but should), the uplifting spirit (and mad skills) you have brought to this contest week after week has been a serious treat to listen to. But now, after watching you do it live last weekend, having just a good time in the booth as the people on the dancefloor, and keeping more people on the dancefloor at 5am (to give you a well-earned round of applause), that's why you deserve to make the Final Two!!! Everyone I talked to last weekend said your set was the highlight...now Orlando needs to see it too!

I'm listening to this set for the second time today...it's that tight!

You. Go. Paco. smilies/grin.gif

When the set first started, I was thinking "Wow, I've somehow managed to start predicting what the next song Paco is going to spin".. come to find out, I've already listened to last weeks set a few times, so I knew what was coming.

smilies/grin.gif

It was great to get to hear an extra 20 minutes of your set, even if it was last weeks. This weeks was just as amazing.

G.I.R.L can do no wrong by selecting you as one of the top 2 in this competition, you will surely amaze and entertain anyone that attends gay days.

Craig

Sustramo: Francisco the composer
There are many aspects of Paco's mixes that makes them so unique and outstanding. His approach to the music is emotional, but intellectual too: there's both feeling and logic to the way he orders the things he chooses. He is like a composer in his ability to creates a complete picture. He's an artist in the manner in which he takes music performed by others and creates his own, very personal work with them. To me, it goes deeper than just being incredibly fun and danceable - and it certainly all that!! Thanks, Paco. Don

In person Paco is taller than you'd expect and has one of the deepest, most beautiful speaking voices you've ever heard. And his smile will make your naughty parts tingle. Plus in his profile photo he kind of looks like Joe Orton. So that's nice.

Oh, and he seems to have a natural gift for this crazy DJ stuff the kids are doing these days. I mean, he's only been doing this a short while and look where he is already. That's a gift.

I was lucky enough to hear Paco play at a party in Barcelona last weeekend i gotta say he was sensational, i visit the city a lot but i have never seen a DJ rock the crowd like he did, the dancefloor was heaving and everyone i saw had huge grins on their faces. A large part of that goes down to this guy's energy and enthusiasm behind the decks, truly inspirational. It was one of the best clubbing experiences i have ever had, thank you Paco!!!!

WOW
What a great party with Paco!!!
He was simply awesome. As one of the organizers of the Bearcelona event, I always have to hear complaints from people about the DJs. Not this time. On the dance floor, people were telling me "wow, he's good" and a friend of mine who is a DJ told me that Paco was flawless technically. The day after, people came to me to say that he had been awesome - I'm quite proud of this because Paco was my personal bet for the event and I can but say that I nailed it with him.

He was also a real professional. He was on the club 2 hours before the event started to have everything ready. Most DJs working with us barely take 10-15 minutes to get used to the sound system. Paco even tuned it perfectly.

Seriously. I'm so proud of having had him at our event!

DJ FSG DJ'd the opening night club night here BEARcelona in Barcelona, Spain, and for 5 hours straight I didn't see a single person not smiling or dancing. We were there when he started that night, and when the last song was played @ 5:30 in the morning, we were there among hundreds of other people clapping and cheering in a standing ovation. The music, the build up, the mixing, everything was top tier and perfect. Easily the best time I've ever had dancing at a club.

I've never much cared for dance music. Thought it was about the beat and nothing else, and I don't like just one element of music to stand out all the time. Paco explained to me the way he mixes music and selects songs based on how they relate to each other in terms of music theory, and how his instincts work that way, and I can hear it so much better now and understand why so many people are passionate about his DJ skills and mixes!

You're the best in this competition Paco, can't wait to hang with you in Orlando!
"Copper beat conducts our feet, Like a doodle beat skipping down the street, In 3D NYC
You can hold the bird, But the song she sings is really free"
That's exactly what you convey, Mr. Guerra, freedom. Freedom from the gay iconic standards we've all heard over, and over and over (from most of your competition no less), but you know they have their place, just not on every single beat. After hearing all the contestants and hearing what they have all brought, I don't see how this decision could go any other way than having DJ FSG win. His sound has been technically amazing, varied, and always placed perfectly in his mix. Never boring, always pushing the limit and always understanding how to get you that much more pumped after you think you've reached your limit.

I have not stopped grinning for this entire set. Going from current hits and songs that deserve to be heard more widely (that Robyn remix is beautiful, as well as that "Stars" track) to effortlessly pulling us back into some old 80s favorites (wow, that Dee-lite mix is white-hot...and then into THE FRIGGIN' GO-GO'S???), the difference you are showing here is your ability to push, nay, SHOVE the envelope. While most of the rest of the DJs left in the competition are doing good jobs playing pretty similar sounds, your set sounds like nothing else. It's inspired and absolutely the most FUN. I keep hearing 3am dark club music with most of the other sets, this is the one that feels like it could be played mid-day, at a pool party, and have everyone jumping and smiling. Work it on out, man!

The final six... Wow... This makes me so nostalgic..I remember that first party we did at the Eagle. You were so nervous, but got so into it once the music started. I was upstairs, leaning against that infamous pool table, when some guy came up to me, wild eyed and excited and gasped "Who IS this DJ???" ANd thus was born the Cult of Paco.... The next month, the next party, we made CDs of a few of your early mixes to give out and for weeks, every time some queen drove her Huyndai down Stark Street, your music was blasting out of the speakers. For far too brief of a time, before you left us and moved away, you DEFINED gay club music in Portland, Or.... And now you're getting the chance to do it for the country and on....

We are all so freaking lucky.

To think it's only been just over a year since that first party....I am so proud.

This is gonna be one sex filled, hot and nasty, humpin' and grindin' pool party...and I can't wait!
Please vote for this guy! For the first time in my life I want to go to Orlando! Something's gotta be said for that!
I live in San Francisco, and I can't wait to go somewhere else to have a good time listening to music. Purely x-induced poser crowd...I'm so over it.
Francisco isn't the standard "do a bump and grind your teeth" he's pure "Bump and Grind". He gets it, you'll get it too, and you can save money for your drunken gnosh-fest after the party. It'll be well earned after all that below the belt funk!
I had such a great time listening to this set, I love your overall embrace of your audience, and like a peace broker with a better beat, you help it work together, harmonically, melodically and funkalogically. Anybody can match beats, but you, sir, understand music and you do what most can't because they wouldn't ever hear what you hear. It's natural talent enhanced with real training.
See you in the next round, and in Orlando!

Written in Real Time:
WYSIWYG with Paco. You started right at the gut, and I know that's exactly where you aim. Like that first splash of the perfect temperature shower hitting the small of your back and radiating outward. It's the Chinese Medicine approach to DJing. If you want hot guys getting all tingly at your pool party, if you like bulges in Soeedos to get bigger, fly Paco to Orlando!
I love the Space Invaders sound in the first song. Killer transitions, great music so far. (10 minutes in). You've still got me grinding 25 minutes in, your transition had a few spotty moments coming out of the "You are not Alone" song into the next one (was that Depeche Mode?) but it was so clever and risky that I totally forgive it. It worked. The next transition was flawless, the song "Don't get me wrong?" (is that Erasure?) Uh-oh, the hands just went up in the air! (32 minutes in) Wow! First guitar I've heard all day and it's about f*cking time! What's that "tune into my frequency, electromagnetic energy" song? (35 minutes). Another great transition into another really bitchin song that I've never heard. I'm thoroughly enjoying this set. (42 minutes) Another great transition, with 12 minutes left to go. I don't want it to end! Ending with a little Jackson 5 never hurt anyone, you just made it educational too! Simply amazing!
I'm so proud...I feel like Annette Bening in "American Beauty" "I watched you the whole time, and you hardly messed up once!"
Overall:
Honestly, not a dull moment in the set, you had me from the first beat and you never lost me. Are you sure you've only been doing this for a year? I'm not just saying this because I know you, it was the best set of the day.
See you in Orlando grrrrrlll!

I don't want to listen to the same thing all night long. Viva variety! Viva Paco!

fellowsr71: Lasso of constructive criticism... http://myspace.com/rofo71
direct to Josh Riptide:
I don't believe I ever used the words "Cruel" or "Malicious" I simply expected to see something constructive from a G.I.R.L. resident dj, whose only criticism was that Francisco's set made you question your own sexuality. That's just creepy.
If you're representing G.I.R.L., then you need to comment on the DJ's style and transitions, be constructive. If you didn't like the fact that there was rap, or something from the 80's, or whatever, say so. But saying you weren't sure you were listening to the right website means nothing to anyone except me. After I deconstructed it, it sounds like "if it's not Gloria Gaynor and Sister Sledge, then it doesn't fit the gay cookie-cutter music I've been brainwashed to expect. Therefore I don't like it."
Music doesn't discriminate, and as a DJ if music isn't your first language "hint hint" then you're in the wrong business.
To next Sunday! Onward and upward! Fierce spin, flash of light, Lasso of Constructive Criticism to be employed from now on! And don't knock Wonder Woman.
Bullets and Bracelets beeyotches!

Josh Riptide: Oh Wonder Woman! aka fellows71 (no wonder...) http://www.joshriptide.com
The contest is about this: Be honest in your comments, postive and negative feedback. However, do not be cruel or malicious.

I don't think I was cruel or malicious with my comment. I just gave my 2 cents after I listened the one hour set of Francisco. I still don't think that it was fittin for a Pool Party feellin... but for some people it was cause the comment got deleted. Oh well... Need to learn how to take a negative feedback and turn it to positive...
for some people things are 'unexpected and funky' or 'the keys fartin' or just simply 'lovin' the music'...
Don't matter if its negative or positive...it's a feedback...learn out of it,that's what matters.

and sorry if my comment didn't make any sense to you. I tried to be funny too but I guess you didn't 'get it'. Maybe I should learn more english, since it's my second language...(hint hint)
And as I mentioned in my comment earlier his mixing skills are great!
and now move on to next sunday!
Lookin forward to hear more!

Paco 's sets immediately grabbed my old house, trash disco night memories....WHICH ARE MY BEST ONES.....and I love his style. He's smoother than I expected, simply because I am new to his work, and I am always impressed when someone not only meets the bar, but crashes it and throws it up in the air.
In my opinion he is a true talent at what began for him as a hobby.
I wish him all the best luck. I love what he does to me feet!

Keep it up... Your ability to create narrative with dance music makes the vapid almost cerebral... With all the fun, and none of the pretension..... The art is in the subtlety. You're so rad, and I am so glad people are getting to hear you and experience the journey.

fellowsr71: Great Set http://myspace.com/rofo71
The difference between Francisco and all the others is that the others only think about the feet on the floor and the hands in the air. Francisco goes for the gut, it's internal with him, he understands his audience and those who "get it" actually get it. It's quite clear the DJ and the audience are both having have a great time.
Francisco transcends gay and straight, and that's why that comment doesn't make sense to me. I'm in touch with all of me, and Francisco taps into emotionally secure people with a full understanding of how music speaks to your body as a whole, not just some twacked out meth-head looking for an endless loop.
So if you're looking for a mindless set, look elsewhere. If you wanna get dirty, hot and sweaty, and have a sensual transcendent time on the dancefloor... Paco Delivers!

Great Start! - Although you held the transition between "Tiny Dance" and "Sing" a bit too long. You had the opportunity to move on in and held it too long. What happened was a "key fart" - meaning the two songs are in different keys and the blend trended toward an off key transition. Pay attention to what keys the songs are in if you're going to carry them for more then 16 or 32 measures. Much better into Beyonce, your third selection.

OK - I'm moving. Go Brooklyn!

SammySpade: Francisco deserves it too http://www.mynorthwest.com
DJ "Paco" as I remember him was my second introduction to really good DJ'd sets. As a true testament to his talent, his club was blasting out all over northwest Portland, Or. My friends were going to spread the word after I dragged them away from that Old Town club scene - they remarked "hell, he's a lot better than anyone else I've heard at CC's (the main club at the time with a dance floor)"

I was just happy to be enjoying his music and feeling comfortable in a place and city where neither of those had been true for me before. I think his music helped me just feel liberated and like I could be myself. :-)

"The Eagle" was pumping so hard that the straight people were coming in too, something that is less common in Portland - especially in that part of town. The str8 couples clearly spread the word and the crowd continued to grow, pulling away from the jam packed Ringlers and Crystal Ballroom next door. Clearly this guy knows his stuff! (and that was back when he was just getting started)

I have been a huge fan of Paco's work, ever since I discovered his live journal blog and podcasts last year. The man is simply an artist. Does he provide great remixes of songs you really want to hear [ie .. Justin]? YES! Do his mixes take you on a journey and keep you guessing what is coming next? YES! But more importantly, the man knows and feels his music. He is not a run of the mill, just put on a song and they'll dance DJ. For him, it is about the music and pleasing his listeners. DJ Francisco Guerra (D'zhay Paqueaux to his friends) knows people and gets music and he knows that one cannot exist without the other.
He taps into the beat and the groove, he understands and becomes one with the user, and to quote Tracy Turnblad, "I don't know about you, but I feel like dancin'"
Just to prove his integrity, I personally asked him to do a Stacey Q vs. Twisted Sister mash-up for me, and he still hasn't done it. Now that's integrity! Just because it would work, doesn't mean it should be done!

gorkabear: Searching for a good DJ is a chore http://www.bearcelona.org
As organizer of one of the biggest bear events in Europe, I'm always facing a serious problem: finding a DJ that can get our attendants sweaty and dancing happily. For some years, we have worked with specialized DJs but experience shows that only competent people with strong musical backgrounds and impeccable technique can guarantee that we all have a good time.

Such is the case of Paco. He's been in our event a few times and he's helped us choosing a few DJs - so it was time for us to have him.

He can mix anything, from mild to wild and his mixes are only a pale reflect of the work this guy makes live.

Therefore we couldn't hesitate: we hired him because he means quality, variety and happy sweaty dancers for the whole night.
