at the Open Fist Theatre in Hollywood! January 24, 2008…Los Angeles…The Open Fist Theatre Company presents the Los Angeles intimate theatre premiere of the musical, James Joyce’s THE DEAD, book by Richard Nelson; music by Shaun Davey; lyrics conceived and adapted by Nelson and Davey; based on the short story by James Joyce. With choreography by Christine Sang, musical direction by Dean Mora and directed by Charles Otte. James Joyce’s THE DEAD will preview on Friday, February 1, Saturday, February 2 & Thursday, February 7 at 8pm and will open on Friday, February 8 at 8pm at The NEW Open Fist Theatre, 6209 Santa Monica Blvd. (former home of The Actor’s Gang) in Hollywood. Set in James Joyce’s turn-of-the-twentieth-century Dublin during the Christmas holiday, Richard Nelson and Shaun Davey’s musical adaptation of THE DEAD is a hauntingly tender and emotionally complex story of an annual gathering of old friends and family. On the 30th anniversary of the Morkan’s holiday festivities, two aging sisters -- Aunt Kate and Aunt Julia -- and their niece Mary Jane host an evening filled with food, stories, memories and music. Among the guests are the Morkan’s nephew Gabriel Conroy and his wife, Gretta. Gabriel doubles as the story’s narrator and shares a deeply personal epiphany at the story’s end, as he realizes what it means to accept the pain of being “ alone,” and yet together, with his wife, Gretta.
