Written by John C. Russell Choreography by Marvin Tunney Directed by Michael Matthews IS EXTENDING THROUGH SUNDAY, APRIL 6 at Celebration Theatre in Hollywood! February 28, 2008…Los Angeles…Celebration Theatre is thrilled to announce that the third show of its 25th Anniversary 2007-2008 Season, the critically-acclaimed, Los Angeles Premiere of the Off-Broadway hit STUPID KIDS, written by John C. Russell, choreographed by Marvin Tunney and directed by Celebration Theatre’s Artistic Director Michael Matthews (Beautiful Thing, The Bacchae) is EXTENDING through Sunday, April 6 at Celebration Theatre, 7051-B Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood. For the first time in Los Angeles, STUPID KIDS examines the struggles of four students at Joe McCarthy High School as they deal with the fears, frustrations, and longings of youth. Told through music-video-like scenes, original music and dance, Russell, takes familiar stereotypes and presents a deep and provocative world both lyrical and revelatory. This rock-and-roll story of sexually confused teens trapped in that time in life that falls between ice cream sodas and gangs is sure to thrill, provoke and explode on the Celebration stage like very few others.
ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM
MICHAEL MATTHEWS (Director) has been the Artistic Director of Celebration Theatre since February 2005. His Celebration Theatre directing credits include: Beautiful Thing (2007 Ovation Nominations, Best Director and Best Play), The Bacchae (2007 Ovation Nominations, Best Director and Best Play) and the Los Angeles Premiere of FOUR. Broadway: Butley (Assistant Director). Chicago: What's Wrong With Angry? (2006 Jeff Nominations, Best Director and Best Production), In the Blood (2004 Jeff Nominations, Best Director and Best Production), and the Chicago Premiere of The Judas Kiss all with Circle Theatre, Being 11 (World Premiere) with Serendipity at Victory Gardens, Porcelain (2001 Jeff Nomination, Best Director) Trap Door Theatre, ...for colored girls who have considered suicide, Journeymen Theatre. Other credits include: Dead End (Assistant Director) Ahmanson Theatre and The Cherry Orchard (Assistant Director) Mark Taper Forum. Next up, Michael will be directing the World Premiere of Cassandra at the Levees for the 25th Anniversary of Celebration Theatre. The Cast of STUPID KIDS will feature Kelly Schumann (Beautiful Thing), Ryan Spahn (The Bacchae, Tonight at 8:30), Michael Grant Terry and Tessa Thompson (Indoor/Outdoor). STUPID KIDS has assembled an award-winning design team. The set design is by Kurt Boetcher (Beautiful Thing, The Marvelous Wonderettes). The lighting design is by Tim Swiss (The Bacchae). The sound design is by Cricket S. Myers (The Marvelous Wonderettes, The Bacchae) and Ryan Poulson (The Bacchae). The costume design is by Marjorie Lockwood (Play It Cool). Original Music is by Ryan Poulson (The Bacchae). STUPID KIDS is produced by Brad Converse (The Fastest Clock in the Universe). STUPID KIDS is EXTENDING through Sunday, April 6, 2008. Performances for STUPID KIDS are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 3:00pm. Ticket prices are $25.00 for all performances.
