With the race for the White House down to Barack Obama and John McCain, 2000 Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore is scheduled to appear for the first time on the campaign trail tonight to lend his support and endorsement to the Illinois senator.
Gore is expected to officially back Obama tonight at a campaign stop in Detroit, The New York Times has reported. Though conversations between Obama and Gore go way back to early primary season, this is the first time Gore has stepped out before the press.
“A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama,” Gore said in an e-mail sent to his supporters. “From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States.”
Gore made his endorsement on his terms—via an email blast to supporters of AlGore.com. Known for his dedication to environmental issues, Gore—who has become something of a media powerhouse since his historic loss in 2000—waited until what he described as the right moment to step in front of the cameras.
“I’ve never asked members of AlGore.com to contribute to a political campaign before, but this moment and this election are too important to let pass without taking action,” Gore said. “Over the past 18 months, Barack Obama has united a movement. He knows change does not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or Capitol Hill. It begins when people stand up and take action.”
Michigan has become an important state for the Obama campaign. John Edwards also unveiled his endorsement of the presumptive Democratic nominee in Michigan.
