Academy-Award winning actor Morgan Freeman is recovering well after surgery to treat injuries he received in a serious car accident on Sunday. According to his publicist, Freeman is up and walking around and hopes to be released from the hospital in a few days.
Freeman reportedly lost control of his vehicle on a highway in Mississippi around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night. The venerated actor, currently appearing in the blockbuster hit film The Dark Knight, broke his elbow and arm in the wreck as well as suffering other injuries.
Mississippi Highway Patrol officials report the 71-year-old actor veered off Highway 32 in Mississippi late Sunday night and flipped his car several times. Police said emergency crews used the jaws of life to crack open Freeman’s car to free him and a female passenger, according to WXYZ.com.
A highway state trooper on the scene of the accident reported Freeman was conscious and speaking shortly after the accident. Alcohol is not believed to have been a contributor to the accident. Retired police officer Bill Rogers, who witnessed the crash, told The Associated Press that Freeman “thought he may have gone to sleep but wasn’t sure… He didn’t know what happened.”
Emergency responders to the scene airlifted Freeman to the Memphis Regional Medical Center with serious injuries to his arm and shoulder. Kathy Stringer, a spokeswoman for the hospital, initially listed Freeman in serious condition on his arrival.
Freeman underwent surgery to treat his injuries on Monday night and is now recovering and looking forward to leaving the hospital soon, according to his publicist. “Morgan is doing well after his surgery last night to reconnect nerves and repair damage in his left arm and hand at the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center… at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis,” Freeman’s publicist, Donna Lee, said in a press statement.
“The surgery lasted approximately 4 and a half hours including recovery and he is in good spirits and was visiting with family members this morning. He was walking this AM, and is looking forward to his release as soon as possible."
A woman in the vehicle identified as Demaris Meyer was also taken to the Regional Medical Center. No official report has been given of her injuries, but an unnamed source says the woman only has “bumps and bruises,” according to TMZ.com. Meyer, 48, is reportedly a friend of the Freeman family.
Freeman is the fourth person involved in the newest Batman film to find himself labeled as a victim of “the curse of The Dark Knight.” Actor Heath Ledger, who plays the Joker in the film, died earlier this year as a result of an accidental overdose of prescription medications. A member of the film’s special effects team died in a car accident and actor Christian Bale found himself in trouble with the law over an alleged assault charge brought by his mother and sister.
Freeman’s publicist stated that well wishes for the actor can be posted at www.planitnow.org/morgan/.
